We’re excited to announce our latest partnership with GNR (the folks who manage the .name registry) to help bring OpenID’s to the .name users everywhere. Now with just a few seconds you can register your very own .name domain name and get email, an OpenID and a whole lot more.
You can sign up today at FreeYourID.com. JanRain is providing the back-end OpenID services for the .name registry to handle the use of your .name as an OpenID. The registration is free for the first 90 days and then $10.95 US per year after that.
Many people have asked us if we could help manage the entire process of domain name registration and management of their OpenID and until now, we haven’t been able to do it. Fortunately, the GNR folks have made this super easy with their FreeYourID.com service and we’re excited to be helping them by providing the OpenID’s. We’re using OpenID delegation and our new site API on MyOpenID to make this happen.
For example, you can head over to FreeYourID.com and enter in a name like Larry Jones and you’ll then be presented with a series of options like larry.jones.name or lj.jones.name or lawrence.jones.name. You then get an email address of larry@jones.name, etc. Best of all, you can point your personal identity page anywhere you want. If you have a blog at username.livejournal.com, you can point your new .name at that and have it redirect there. You can even point at your own Jyte profile page to show off your claims, cred and contacts like I’ve done with scott.kveton.name … :-)
As always, any questions, comments or concerns, feel free to post them here! And go sign-up for your .name! :-)

I proposed few weeks ago to use the Indonesian extension (.id), in order to have scott.kveton.id… All we need is an indonesian provider that host an openId server, to have a realy cool OpenId url ;-)
(Sorry, the rest of my blog is in french)

very cool. But when I tried to log in to manage my id, I failed. “It seems that ge.xiaofei.name is not a real openid. Please check and try again.”
Is this a problem? I have already register ge.xiaofei.name, and in the email it tells me that ” Your OpenID: ge.xiaofei.name”. Did I miss something?

And is there any possibility to connect this service with my old OpenID feir.myopenid.com? I am not that need a new OpenID anyway.

Did you sign up for your .name via the FreeYourID service? If not, we don’t have a way to let current users get an OpenID with their .name. This is a great feature to add though.

Great questions … :-) We can’t do this yet but it sounds like something people will want. I’ll talk with the team here and at GNR to see what we can do. Thanks for your comments (and patience)! :-)

But what does the email mean? Did it mean that I have already got “ge.xiaofei.name” as my openid?
“Thank you for registering with YourID, we hope you will be pleased with your new, personal Internet identity.
You now have a personal email address ge@xiaofei.name, an OpenID digital identity ge.xiaofei.name and a personal homepage address - all linked to your own personal Internet name.
Your Email Address: ge@xiaofei.name
(forwarding to): #####
Your Homepage: http://www.ge.xiaofei.name
Your OpenID: ge.xiaofei.name
Your OpenID can be used to log in to websites without giving out your password or details to anyone. More and more websites are supporting OpenID. To log in and manage your personal address services you just have to remember the following address:
http://login.ge.xiaofei.name

Just got off the phone with GNR … looks like you went into the management interface and enabled “Redirect” instead of “Frame” in the advanced options. This breaks the delegation tags that we have in the headers. If you switch back to frame this will work.
The GNR folks are putting together a patch that will help alleviate this. As for hooking your existing MyOpenID to a .name, we’re going to work on that.

:) Thanks Scott. I got it.

Hi Xiaofei,
We applied a patch to the redirect issue - when the redirection of the domain name was applied, the openID header could not be found, and so openID would not work.
To have consistency between the visible page on http://www.first.last.name and first.last.name, the patch disallows redirect for first.last.name (instead using a frameset so the OpenID header is found), but allows redirect for http://www.first.last.name.
On a separate note - we’re opening for two-character names on the second level in Q2. Then you can finally have your name the other way around, if you want :)
Thanks,
Hakon

Hi Scott,
I found another problem you may solve. I login to MyOpenID with the new OpenID “ge.xiaofei.name”. I found there are two sites listed in my Trusted Sites, but the url of the second one is empty. You may take a look at the snapshot here:http://static.flickr.com/184/389208920_cc3807462f.jpg
And when I click the “http://ge.xiaofei.name/”, I am directed to my personal blog (I use redirect for the new url). But I think here it should be point to my personal information page as http://feir.myopenid.com does, yes?

That’s pretty cool. I’ve found some bugs on the site, and this seems to be the best place to report them.
1. No “report a bug”, or in fact any indication of how to contact them.
2. Too much Ajax! The interface is pretty slick, but there are some things that would really benefit from being directly addressable at a real URL - the “What is an OpenID” link on the homepage for example. At the very least it should work unobtrusively instead of using javascript:void() as the href.
3. The signup process doesn’t work in Opera - but you don’t get an error message until after you have reserved your ID. This leaves you unable to re-register with a different browser. It turns out you can still sign in using the username and password you have set up, but I only discovered that through trial and error.
4. In fact, the site should just plain work without JavaScript enabled. If I’m using it to manage my identity it matters if I can get in to it using whatever tools I have to hand.
5. The framed redirect thing is really nasty. I tried to turn it off but it ignored my setting - possibly because of the OpenID resolution problem mentioned above. Solution: use a meta-refresh; that way OpenID tags can still be found but user’s don’t end up browsing in a frame (and hence losing their URL bar as a useful way of seeing where they are).
Don’t get me wrong - I really like the idea of the service, and most of it is nicely implemented. It’s mainly the dependence on JavaScript that annoys me. That’s fine for some sites, but not for an online identity provider.

Simon: great feedback … I know the GNR guys are watching this space for more reports like this one … :-)
I’ve sent along another possibility for the frameset/redirect problem to help get away from it but to still be able to do centralized delegation. Users shouldn’t know or care how the delegation is working, it should just work.
I’ll ask about disabling the javascript. You’re right, people should be able to use whatever tools they have available. Thanks Simon.

One more thing: the site doesn’t allow ‘+’ signs in the address used for e-mail forwarding. I like to use myusername+identifier@gmail.com to keep track of where my e-mails are coming from.

Simon,
thanks for the feedback - we have added “report a bug” to the footer of our page. We’ll be thankful for any reports!
We have also amended the redirect to rely exclusively on meta-refresh. Agree that it is a much better solution.
We’ll be working on reducing the reliance on javascript for the signup procedure and fully supporting Opera.
Managing your .name ID (e.g. via http://login.peter.morgan.name or clicking Sign In on the homepage) should currently work also without javascript.
Thanks a lot for your feedback,
Hakon

Two issues:
1
“It seems that marcin.openid.pl is not a real openid. Please…”
It is a real openid for sure. This login box is misleading.
2
I can’t quite get it: how can I be logged in myopenid.com using marcin.jagodzinski.name . OK, I know: it was delegated, but that’s something beyond normal delegation I suppose.
I have delegated marcin.jagodzinski.waw.pl to marcin.openid.pl. When I login using marcin.jagodzinski.waw.pl I’m redirected to openid.pl and I log in as marcin. And “inside” openid.pl I’m recognized as “marcin.openid.pl”, not “marcin.jagodzinski.waw.pl”
And one additional issue: I delegated marcin.jagodzinski.waw.pl to username.myopenid.com. When I try to login to some OpenID enabled site, I’m just redirected to myopenid.com homepage. But when I’m using username.myopenid.com, I’m redirected directly to login page. Why?

=marcin: re: (1) Where did you see that message?
re: (2) We have a new site API for creating and managing OpenID’s for MyOpenID … its not quite documented and the GNR folks were kind enough to be our guinea pigs as we tested it out. You’re logging into MyOpenID as marcin.jagodzinski.name.
I’m not quite sure why you’re seeing the behavior you’re talking about re: being redirected to the login page versus just the MyOpenID.com web page. I’ll ask some of the folks here and see if they know.

1. http://www.freeyourid.com/login_openid.php
2.1 OK. I suspected some API behind this. It looks a little strange. I always thought that from OpenID URL you should be able either to discover OP or there is some delegation.
2.2. I tried it several times, to ensure if it’s not a RP implementation issue, but it’s not: “straight” login using my myopenid.com identity works good, but if it’s delegated, I’m pointed to myopenid.com homepage, not to login page. I can login, but I have no way to confirm and be redirected back to RP.
And other question: is there a possibility to license myopenid.com app? If there is, please contact me: marcin(dot)jagodzinski(at)gmail.com.

@marcin
You’re missing the ‘www.’ at the beginning of your MyOpenID server URl. It should be ‘http://www.myopenid.com/server’.
Requiring the ‘www.’ is probably not correct behavior, and I’ve created a ticket to fix it.

Hello,
I’m curious. Is there any interest in adding Jabber support for .name users as well? That would make .name really handy as not only an OpenID and e-mail provider, but also an IM/VoIP provider through Jabber.
P.S: this blog’s OpenID sign-up is not working with https://getopenid.com. Thought I’d point out that

Hi Ivo,
Adding Jabber/IM/VOIP is something we have been thinking about for a while, and it is a really good idea. We are always looking for additional uses for the .name identity.
Also, we have fixed a few bugs in the beta and Opera 9 should work after our next code push later today.
Best,
Geir

One issue - we are currently getting reports suggesting that hotmail are bouncing .name email that has been set up to forward to @hotmail.com accounts.
We are working hard to get in touch with them, but are having no luck getting this resolved - a workaround could be to just forward to another provider until they fix the problem.
We are publishing updates regarding the issue here http://blog.gnr.com

well I just got my .name. I really like to use it. No more Id management of remembering passwords. I’m a big fan of open ID from starting and now its make my life easy and also giving one kind of security to my Online Identity. Thanks to Open ID and GNR. I also got my personal email ID. Now I seen something like social graph in the website. whats that?
Now CallVerifID is working with .name Open ID?
Is it possible that we can chat by using Open ID?
